I have a house I recently baught (about 4 years ago) and I'm looking to renovate and move things around. My basement floor is unfinished it is all cement still. I would like to put a floor down but I'm not sure about one of the holes in the floor I was able to identify all except for one. The picture below is a description of what the layout is the hole that I'm not sure about is about the size of a paint can and I'm not sure how deep its full of water and has been like that since we moved. If someone can identify this for me it would be a reat help thanks again

If your drawing is to scale I'd guess a sump pump pit. Is there a smaller black plastic 3-4"pipe entering from the side?

I agree, it's probably for the sump pump. I've seen many new homes built with the sump pit all ready to go. If you have water filled all the way to the top... almost to the lid... I'd put a sump pump in there soon. Granted, you said that you've never had water problems. However, if your area gets hit hard with rain there is a possibility that water might be an issue.

If this is a sump pump then the water in it is at the same level as the underground water around your house. Try to empty the hole by siphon or bailing it out to see if an old pump is in the bottom (either disconnected or broken down). As ballengerb1 says there may be one or more pipes feeding it to help keep underground water under control.

And logan176 is right - if it's empty you should get a pump into it with a hose or pipe attached to take the water away (to the floor drain would work).
