    Windows XP SP2 -> Owner
    OS: Windows XP SP2

    Background:

    I purchased a laptop and when I installed or booted for the first time it never asked me for my user name. Usually when I install an O/S I will give XP my name like "Don Lazov" and then when I go to C:\Documents and Settings I will see some folders with sure enough one named "Don Lazov" and all my docs and pictures will be there.

    Now on this laptop when I first logged on/booted I was "Owner" so I went into Control Panel and changed "Owner" to Don Lazov. When I click on Start or look at "My Computer" I can see "Don Lazov" just fine, however if I navagate to "C:\Documents and Settings" I can see Administator, 'Default User', 'All Users', 'Owner' and 'Owner.YOUR-9D14AB7E74' so if I go back and save a document or image and then when I go and look for it it is now stored in 'C:\Documents and Settings\Owner.YOUR-9D14AB7E74' (not in any of the other folders).

    Also to make matters worse I looked in the registry (regedit) and if I do a search on "Owner.YOUR-9D14AB7E74" it is all over the place.

    This is pretty important as far as I can tell. So my question is thus:

    With out deleting the "Don Lazov" or "Owner.YOUR-9D14AB7E74" and recreating them, how can I fix this so that "Owner.YOUR-9D14AB7E74" is now "Don Lazov"?

    If I rename "Owner.YOUR-9D14AB7E74" to "Don Lazov" will that fix it or make it worse? Would I have to go into the registry and edit each instance of "Owner.YOUR-9D14AB7E74" to "Don Lazov"?

    Is there an easy fix?

    I just don't want to hack this.

    Thank you.

    Just create a user with whatever name you want. Make it an admin.

    Before I do that what will happen to my current user account and all of the installed programs, email and what not that I have created under this account?

    I renamed the "Owner" user account to "My Name - Don Lazov" which then associated that account with "Owner.YOUR-9D14AB7E74" and have installed everything under this account. If I create a New User account, say "Don Lazov" what will happen to all the program files I installed and my settings?

    For instance I use bit torrent a lot and it store the files in this weird Owner account (Owner.YOUR-9D14AB7E74). And the application data like for all of my software is in here. Won't I loose all of my settings by creating a New User account and deleting the old one, or the faulty one?

    I think what Scott was saying is to create a new user so that you now have two. One will be the "Owner" one that you renamed. The other will be whatever you want it to be called. Then copy all the pictures from the Owner.Your... folder into the folder for your new user. Then log out, log into the new user and remove the owner/rename account.

    Hopefully that will get it.

    What LT said, except that I wouldn't remove the Owner user.

    What defines what's available to a user is what's in the Doc & Settings folders especially the desktop and start menu folders. Anything in the Default and All user folders is available to all users. So you can copy items to either one of those or to the new folder created when you create a new user.
