    Incorrect State on W-2
    Hello,

I came to USA in Oct 2008. I have been working in Connecticut (CT) till date.

My Employer has issued me W-2 for FY08 that incorrectly shows Illinois (IL) instead of CT.

I asked my employer to re-issue a W-2 but they have refused, saying that my address was not updated with them and they deduct taxes from IL by default.

So, it seems that the tax withheld has been deposited with IL State.

    1. IL State Tax department has asked me to submit an IL1040 form to get the withholded money back.

    2. CT State Tax dept. does not require me to file a state return as my income for FY08 is less than $13,000. Not sure, but they told me over the phone.

    Can somebody please help me:
    a) Whether I can file my Federal return through Turbotax meanwhile I sort the state filing issue

    b) Do I need to get a Tax consultant, if the matter is complicated; or can I sort it myself?

    c) Can somebody, if they have faced or know similar situations, guide me the steps if I am mistaken or missing something?

    Thanks
    Amit

    a. Yes you can file Federal without worrying where to file your state taxes.

    b. If you did live in IL and meet IL residency requirement then its better you file taxes in IL for this year and then make sure your address is changed for 09

    c. I haven't faced such situation but I worked in different state and have received W2 in different state because my residency was there and I just file return for the state where I received W2 for.
