I have purchased a spring - part number 165X76SEMA - for my Murray Riding Mower, model 40808X8D. The original spring broke, and I do not know where it connects to the chasis. The instructions that came with the part assumes that the original spring is still installed, and otherwise, makes no sense. I know that the long end connects to the Idler Bracket Assembly. (The instructions use the term "Frame Channel" :confused: as to where it connects on the chasis.) I have seen the schematics on

(Select Motion Drive 1, part number 40), but it makes no sense either. Any help as to where the spring attaches to the chasis will be greatly appreciated.

The frame channel (well this is a one piece frame) should be on the side.. look for a worn hole basically...

Thanks for your reply. I didn't see any holes on the side that would work. I think I may have found it. It's a oval hole on top of the frame, toward the back. I removed the battery and its plastic holder, and this will allow one end of the spring to hook. I'll give this a try tomorrow.

Yes, sorry I can't be of more help (havn't worked on newer murrays) just the older models...

Most helpful, didn't know that a hole in the frame could be used. Turned out, the length to the oval hole didn't provide any tension, but after doing some cleaning (grass, etc.), found a penny-sized round hole nearby. This *appears* to be the one, and feel of the brake/clutch pedal seems right. Will install blade housing in the next day or so, and give it a go. It's a 1995 model...

Success! I had to remove the black grass catcher holder on the back of the mower. It was covering up the proper round hole, and the oval hole next to it. There was a small piece of spring still in the worn round hole. The oval hole was used to pull the spring back to hook onto the round hole. And Briggs & Stratton sent me an eMail with a toll free number to call. The guy didn't know the answer during the first call, but called me back after talking to "their Murray guy". Then I figured out that the grass catcher holder was covering up what I was looking for...

A Swedish repair amateur here with the same problem. A loose and broken clutch spring end (the one that fits in the hole behind the grass catcher holder). But I cannot figure out where and how to attach the other end of the spring.
Somewhere on the Idler Bracket Assembly (9209Z) I guess but the exploded view I have is very unclear, in fact it says nothing.
Anyone who can help me?
