Can my security officers carry handcuffs and batons whilst on dutie?
I would like to know if my security officers can carry and use handcuffs and batons for self defence. They mainly patrol warehouses and building yards and some times do private functions and I would like to know if my officers can carry these items without getting arrested for having them on them. If they can how do I go about it so they don't get into trouble. Thank you please let me know.

    Hello f:

Carrying handcuffs or batons isn't against the law. It's how they're used that can get you into trouble.

I know you SAY they'll be used for self defense. However, unless you're in a HIGH security business where you hire only HIGHLY trained operatives, you're opening yourself up to lawsuits that I think you'll lose.

I would suggest calling your local police department and asking them about the batons and handcuffs and understanding the ramifications of carrying them.

Your employees may be unlawfully detaining people with the handcuffs and the use of batons could result in lawsuits against the employees and you, the employer.

You may be told to "upgrade" your license for these employees to carry these items. I don't see where handcuffs can be used in self defense either.
