I will be upgrading my service panel which is now a 150 Amp up to a 200 Amp panel. I am trying to get a materials list together so I can get prices in order ahead of time. My question is what size copper or aluminum do I need to get to feed from the meter to the panel location? It is about 10 feet away. Also I have heard that sometimes you need to have the meter upgraded by the power company also, even though it is only 50 amps more. Is this true? Thanks

A 200A service will require 2/0CU or 4/0AL conductors.

I hope that whole 10' is not inside the house? If so that is most likely too far in without a disconnect. Every area is different, but most are in the 4'-6' range of unfused conductors inside the structure.

The meter itself is of no concern. The power company will re-use or replace it at their discretion.

Not usually. You DO have to get them involved though in some way. Most have a form to fill out to let them know you are doing a service upgrade.
