I'm trying to figure out the placement of the air gap for a dishwasher I'm installing in my home. My wife and I are doing a partial remodel in our kitchen and adding a dishwasher is on the list. I've seen the air gaps in some homes on top of the sink next to the sprayer but we don't have a hole for one on the sink. We planned on using the old sink because of its design and age. I can cut a hole into the sink if necessary but would prefer not to. Are there any other options to installing the air gap that you know of? We don't have a disposal nor plan on installing one either. Along with the dishwasher, the cabinets and countertops are being replaced, so we have some options in the way it needs to be installed. My current plan is to have the dishwasher 4 or 5 feet (that is the length of the supply line) from the sink, going around a corner. I was going to install a tee at the hot water spigot for the dishwasher supply line and then just tie the drain into the existing one for the sink. I just don't know how I should proceed with the air gap.

Please see the images below one is with Air gap installed having D/W and G/D, the other two shows The high loop installation.

You can install a high loop with G/D and high loop with out G/D; you have to loop as high as possible inside the cabinet under the sink, good luck.

The high loop plan is a great idea. Unfortunately I just found out that I have to have an air gap, due to code. I appreciate the help and advice but now I have to put it in.

You can drill 1 3/8" hole for AirGap in the counter top itself. The hole would be in the back, close to the splash.

You can also drill hole in the sink. It actually is not such a hard job to do. We routinely drill Cast Iron sinks and Stainless steel sinks.
