I was going to change a couple of three handle shower valve to a single handle and not open up the back walls. One is tile the other is a fiberglass tub. I was wondering what was the best means in each case to cut the oval for the plate in fiberglass and to cut tile. Also any particular shower valve seems to work better for retrofitting.

The ROTOZIP tool with plastic bit and the ceramic wall tile bit work great for these jobs.

I am a fan of the MOEN shower valve for the retrofits... the body of the valve is smaller than most and you don't end up soldering as deep down in the hole in the wall.

You will definitely need a MINI-TUBING cutter to cut the pipes off in the wall... ;)

Would anyone avoid shark bite fitting if possible on the copper. I believe they have slip couplings fitting in shark bite. I think I will just solder with slip coupling if possible. Plus copper fittings you hit the angles better. Just curious about skark bite

I don't have enough experience to say much on these. I have used them for repair work a couple times and they were great!

They are approved for use behind walls, but I'm a little old fashioned and won't use them there... although behind a remodeling plate seems pretty accessible to me... ;)

Soldering always works best!

In addition to advice you received above: I agree, Moen and Delta have smaller-then-average rough-in bodies. You need small body since you will need room to insert torch. Here is where you will find appreciation for small valve.

We use 4" grinder with good diamond blade to cut though tiles. As far as copper vs. SharkBite fittings: I agree with Mark. You can beat well soldered joint...
