I get a sewage smell in my bathroom. Can this come from a deformed wax seal under the toilet. What are other likely couses?

Any leaking seal could cause this. Always replace or repair a leaking seal.
Did you check the various water traps being all filled?
Sometimes water is sucked out of the trap by dirt. Open up and clean in that case.
