Standard Deduction - J1 short term scholar.

How much standard deduction is allowed for me... is it 5450$ as fr Indian Guys? so that I don't need to pay any taxes.

Or I heard that researchers are not required to pay federal taxes. Will J1 short term scholar come under research , so that I don't need to pay taxes...

Check your visa stamp why you were given J1? Read http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/04/...-teachers.html
J1 researcher is exempt from federal income tax for two years. You pay state income tax.

Yes, scholar normally means research scholar. Your income is not subject to SS tax, Medicare tax and federal income tax. You will pay state income tax.
For state filing requirements, check at state web site.
You will file Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ and Form 8843 and get federal tax withheld back.

THis is the some lines from 1040nrez form which is to be submitted...
I from INDIA got stipend of 5001$ and out of that 700$ is deducted as federal taxes and there was no state tax,.

5)Scholarship and fellowship grants. Attach explanation (see page 5) ---5001$
6)Total wages and scholarships exempt by a treaty from page 2, Item J--
10)Adjusted gross income. Subtract the sum of line 8 and line 9 from line 7 -- 5001$
    11)Itemized deductions (see page 6) --
    12)Subtract line 11 from line 10 ---
    13)Exemption deduction (see page 6)----
    14) Taxable income. Subtract line 13 from line 12----
15)Tax. Find your tax in the Tax Table on pages 12–20---
    18)Federal income tax withheld (from Form W-2, 1042-S, and 1099-R) --700$

Dear sir, please help me with this what to filled in various blanks, I am very much in need as presently I am in INDIA and cannot contact anyone personally,

As you previously said that there will be no federal taxes for researchers from india, but all my taxes which are in withheld are federal, so can I get the whole taxes paid as refund ?
