The wires from the fixture are white, blue and black. The wires from my ceiling are white, black and copper. I connected the white with white, black and blue to black and the copper to ground. The fan worked fine but when I put bulbs into the light fixture they blew out. Why would this happen?

Sounds perfect to me, the wiring ,not the bulbs burning out. There should be no problem based on the info provided.

All I can offer is to be sure to check across the black and white in the ceiling with a meter, should be 120 volts. Check across black and ground , should be 120 volts. Check across white and ground,should be close to zero volts, any more than two volts indicates another problem.

Also check that the lamps are rated at least 120 volts.

If you are very careful with the test probes , test in the lamp socket for voltage, again should be 120 volts. Testing here takes some steady skill to touch only the inner shell and the small eyelet contact at the bottom of the socket. And say it again, very careful!!

If you are unable to do this testing to troubleshoot this you may need to call in a tech.

Are there any other wiring connection you made? Check those for a possible miswire.

Confirm that the bulbs are/were the correct wattage. Did you ever try again, or stop after the first bulb(s) blew?

The bulbs were 60watt which is what the fixture called for, I disconnected the fixture until I could figure it out, just bought the house and don't have much of a history on the wiring, there was a fixture up when we moved in but the second day we were here it started to smell like something was burning so we took that down.

If it was me I would try a second set of bulbs, in case the first set were damaged. But if you're having similar problems with other fixtures.. . Maybe time to call back the electrician
