Could taking the contraceptive pill give u a false positive pregnancy test result? Xx
No.
An HPT tests for pregnancy hormones that your body produces, not what is in the pill.
Great thank you x
Just thinking though. When your on the pill when is the right time to take a test because you have 'false periods' so you wouldn't know if you missed one?
So... what's the situation?
On the pill and late, and had a + test?
The only thing id mention is you must strictly follow the directions on the test, especially the timing. Taking the test first thing in the morning when you get up, when hormone levels are most concentrated, is suggested.
The pill, with "perfect use" has about a 1-2% failure rate... with "typical use" its closer to 3-5%... meaning up to 1 in 20 with typical (an occasional missed pill) use will become pregnant.
Did you actually have a positive?
And if really not sure, go to a health or women's clinic or your doctor and have a test done there to confirm.
I am sure you know that the pill is not 100 percent effective to becoming pregnant while taking it, is possible, slim but possible
OK ill tell you the situation. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for 4 years we did once but it ended in miscarriage. We can get pregnant but only have a 4% chance because of problems my husband has. At xmas I lost my job and my husbands shifts got cut so we decided now wasn't a good time to be having a baby and I went back on the pill (havnt been on it for 5 years). We were still having uprotected sex last month then got my period it was lighter than usual and just well different painless too. I done a test to be sure and it came bak negative. So I started my new pill been on it three weeks now but having headaches, using toilet A lot, have very sore swollen breasts and nipples and cramps like my period is going to start for the last few weeks I'm also getting some spottin here and there. I know the pill can cause pregnancy symptoms so I'm trying not to worry but thinking could I be pregnant? Obviously don't want to be taking the pill in case I am but don't want to stop in case I'm not. Xx
If it's been several weeks since you might have gotten pregnant, try another test. If it is negative, odds are you are not pregnant. If you feel there is still a strong possibility, explain the situation to your gp and ask about having a blood test done.
Thank you. I made a doctors appointment yesterday but he can't see me until Monday so was thinking about doing a test myself but thought being on the pill would give me a false positive that's why I asked my original question.. thank you all again xx
Thanks for the info... helps with perspective.
You are absolutely right about "pregnancy symptoms"... stress alone, such as worries about your husbands cut hours, can throw off your body.
Test about a week after your period. Remember, negative are not proof you aren't pregnant... it's the failure to detect threshold levels of hormone... generally speaking, a positive is pretty reliable if done per test directions while a negative is inconclusive. A negative can mean you aren't pregnant, or it can be that you are but you aren't producing enough hormone to throw a positive.
Years ago, with higher dosages, there were concerns about whether there were issues with the pill leading to complications in pregnant women who took the pill before knowing they were pregnant. Last I read, subsequent studies showed no issues tied to low dose use of the pill while pregnant.
That said, I completely defer to your provider. Your physician should be consulted if you have any questions about your cycle and issues with your birth control and potential pregnancy.
Thank you that's very helpful. I will be buying a test tonight when my husband gets home from work. So hopefully my mind should be put at ease in afew hours xx
Hello! I took a test on the 26th and it was negative. I also decided my pill was messin by body up too much and stopped taking it on the 25th however my period still hasn't arrrived still just spotting like when I was taking the pill. I took another test and that was negative too but I'm confused as to why no period?
Could be just from adjusting to the effects from the pill. Some women will find it may take a few cycles before they become regular again, other women find it happens right away.
You can always see your gp for a test in the office, most often it will still be a urine test, but they might suggest a blood test. Sometiimes they will want you to wait another cycle to see if your period still doesn't show up.
