The problem here is one of photographic technique more than camera choice. You need to know how to properly light your artwork for even lighting, without reflections, and how to properly position the artwork and camera. The solutions depend on the size of your artwork - it's much more complicated to evenly light larger art works (paintings 4-6 feet or larger) than smaller artworks (paintings up to 3-4 feet).

The next question is what you want to do with the resulting photos. If these are just for your files and marketing materials (brochures, website, etc.) then you don't need super high quality and most consumer level digicams can do a good job (when you know how to configure the camera properly - none of them will do a good job on the "green arrow" automatic mode). If you want to sell reproductions of your paintings, then you need a totally different type of camera to get reproduction quality, as well as being even more particular about lighting and shooting modes.
