Can I be arrested and jailed for not paying alimony on time?
I was ordered to pay my x wife alimony due on the 1st of each month. After court, she and I decided that it would be better for us both if we split the amount into 4 payments and I pay every Friday. Since that time, I have been paying her every Friday. Recently, I have been mailing her a check every Friday and she is enraged that I am not putting cash in her hand on Friday. She is threatening to have me arrested and put in jail for this. Is that possible? We both reside in North Carolina.

Welcome to AMHD. I would never attempt to interpret a document I haven't seen. As I understand these matters, you would have to fail to pay her, and she would file a petition to hold you in 'wilful contempt' of the court order of alimony. Doesn't sound to me like you are in contempt. Btw: I see why she's an 'x'. How long you have to support her?

Keep paying her by check. This "I want the cash in my hand" thing is definitely not in your best interest. You will probably have to prove that you paid her the money so hold on to the cancelled checks. And no, she cannot just have you thrown in jail for nonpayment of alimony. Judges don't do that any more. You will first have to attend a contempt hearing and the judge will decide.
