    Upgrade breaker box
I am adding approxametly 900sqft to my house. My current meter and breaker box is outside. The breaker box does not have a main breaker. It has a sub breaker rated at 50amps. The current box is completely full. Before I run the wires for the addition, I wanted to remove the existing outside breaker box and put in a new breaker box inside. One that will increase my circuits from the current 24 to 30 or 40. The new box will be less than 5 feet away from where it is currently. With the exception of moving the existing wires and running new main wires from the meter, is there anything else that I need to consider before I purchase a new box?

    Thank you, Dan

    Dan,

You need to talk to your POCO to see if they will agree to let you move the main panel from its current location.

Secondly, since you would be working with deadly levels of electricity, please do not be offended with my suggestion to call an electrician or at least call your LAHJ to see if you would be allowed to do the work.

Homeowners are usually allowed to do most work on their homes but this involves cutting from the meter to the panel.

I contacted the dominion power and they said that moving the breaker box was up to me. It didn't effect them. I just needed to get a load letter from an electrician to give to them so they know if they need to increase my input, and that way I know what size of breaker box I need to get. Thank you for the help.
