Starter kick back on Briggs lawnmower
When I pull the starter occasionally it will jerk the rope back sharply. What causes this jerk back? Is it a compression problem or a rope problem?

    KISS

The clutch between the pull rope and the flywheel needs replacing or cleaning.

There should be no dirt inside the assembly. There are about 5 ball bearings, so if you take it apart, don't loose them.

The spinning portion can get a little grease.

Cost is either $0 or $15. $15 if you buy a new one.

It spins off, but is difficult to get off. Use a band wrench or put one of the screws back in and LIGHTly tap the tab with a hammer. Don't wedge anything in the fins of the flywheel, they will break off.
