If you haven't already been running, start slowly. Some events are not built on speed, but on endurance. Sometimes it can help to build up your stamina with sprints... run as fast as you can for a quarter way around the track, then race walk or jog the next quarter, repeat the cycle. If you have not been very physically active, it will take time to build up to being comfortable with running at any speed and for an length of time.
Be sure you are eating healthy foods and getting plenty to drink. Listen to your body, slow down the pace a bit if you need to and work up a little more slowly. Trying to go all out right from the start often leads to injury and frustration.
Check with the track coach for suggestions on which events you might want to try out for and ideas on how best to prepare for them.
