    Security cameras?
Recently I lost my wallet and had two checks there (blank), I canceled my credit cards, bank card etc. but forgot about checks.

A month later I saw $1300 is missing from my bank account. I found out someone wrote the checks and cashed them at a local payday loan place.

I went there and they have security cameras, I explained what happened but they simply do not want to help. Checks were cashed THERE so they have this person on video.

Cops took the report but it's very low on their priority list and I'm worried that those security takes get recycled after a while - if not already.

Is there a law on how long those places have to keep the tapes? What's the norm, days, weeks..

I've seen tapes re-used in 24 hours; I've seen tapes re-used in 30 days. Hard to know. There is no law. I've seen places refuse to hand over the tapes without a Subpoena.

So no good news so far..

Does anyone know how long BANKS keeps those tapes for? I'd assume they'd keep them longer than payday loan places so if they keep it for a week or two then I'm out of luck for sure.

Call the bank and ask - there is no law and each bank makes its own decision.

Did you get your original cancelled check back to see just who it was made out to and just what sort of ID was used to cash it? Sometimes they make a note of d/l on the check itself.

Go see the DA ( push him to issue a warrant for the tapes to show who cashed them)

I would assume the back as returned the money to your account at this point?

    Hello tel:

I don't know why you're so interested in doing police work. If it were me, I wouldn't care who ripped the bank off.

Notice I said BANK - not YOU. You aren't the victim here - the BANK IS.

If you simply report the check to the bank and the cops, the bank will give you back your money. Yeah, it really IS that simple.
