I had a 401k plan with a company. I moved on to another company for a short time. I lost all my 401k info and have no idea who where its at. The company is no longer in business. I went to the web sites but everyone wants me to pay before they find my money. I don't want to get screwed. Is there any way I can find my 401k.:confused:

Try contacting former co-workers and see if they know who managed the 401k plan.

The SSA is required to keep track and any money held in retirements accounts for you. When you file for SS payments, they will inform you of any funds. You can try contacting them now to see if they have anything listed for you.

There are a couple of web sites that can help you track this down - either PBCG or the National Registry of Unclaimed Retirement Benefits (NRURB). The NRURB is responsible with keeping over 50,000 individual retirement accounts for individuals who have forgotten 401(k), profit sharing and other company sponsored plan balances that have been abandoned. A quick way to see if you have monies waiting would be to check the following websites. Keep your Social Security number handy (or those of your retiree aged parents and relatives) to see if any forgotten benefits are awaiting a claim.
