What is the typical out of pocket cost (no insurance coverage) of cataract surgery including the more expensive multifocus lens?
5 years ago, my surgery cost was $3,400 per eye with a standard single focus lens.
I wonder if costs have come down in the intervening years.
The place that I worked two years ago charged $2,500 an eye for a standard lens, and $4,500 for the high end multi focal lens. So I would assume national average is rather close to this...
Thank you Chihuahuamama. I just had cataract surgery here in Colombia using the multifocus lens. Insurance paid for the operation but I had to buy the lens for about $720 at current exchange rates. I like the result and would like to do the other eye. It has no cataract so all would be out of pocket. I was deciding whether to do it here (where Lasik surgery was invented by the way) or in the US. My doctor said it would cost me $1200 (at current exchange rate) including the multifocus lens. If your answer is accurate then the decision is a no brainer... IŽll do it here in Colombia.
