    Cut outs in block wall
I want to install several doors and windows in a concrete block building on my farm. The walls are 10' tall and only support an asphalt shingled roof. No door or window is more than 3' wide.

Will I need to temporarily support the wall to cut out for a 3' opening? Do I need to use angle iron or can I use a wood header?

    Thanks!

I would keep it concrete. Use concrete lintels.

Example: if its an 8"thick wall use two concrete lintels 4" thick by 8" high and figure 4 min bearing on each jamb side.

I would tooth the cutouts and use jamb blocks to make a nice block return for the door jamb to sit against.

Wood will shrink and it's a no no for a structural header to marry to block walls. It was used in the old days for all brick building. You really don't want to paint and create maintenance problems and shrinkage down the road.
