    Possible suit for slander
Can I sue the psychiatrist, that interviewed my son, for slander? After reading his report to my son's probation officer, this man had the audacity to call me, and I quote, " a recovering alcoholic". This is also included in the legal papers that were brought to court. The statement is not true and could damage my reputation. What recourse do I have to combat this man's false statement.

Where did he get this information from? Is it possible your son gave it? I find it hard to believe that he would just make it up. And if he can show that your son told him, then he has a valid defense.

I asked my son what he said to the psychiatrist about my drinking and he told me all he said was that I use to drink but I don't anymore. I do drink on occasion but not like I use to. The psychiatrist did ask me if I drank and I told him the same thing.

You can not sue him for things that are true, and it appears the info was given to him by your own son.

In fact I am surprised you were allowed to even see the report

It seems that you gave the psychiatrist the information. He did say you were recovering versus an alcoholic. If you don't want anyone to know you drink, next time don't volunteer any information. Be sure to tell your son this as well. He didn't have to say anything but thought he'd be helpful and answer the man's questions. The psychiatrist was trying to get a "picture" of what sort of homelife this kid has - nothing more.
