    Hello k:

In this country, if you are not a member of a union, or you don't have an employment contract, your boss can fire you for any reason whatsoever, or no reason at all.

That is, unless you're a member of a protected class, and he fired you for the reason the class is protected. For example, older workers are members of a protected class. They can't be fired because they're old. But, they CAN be fired for ANY other reason.

Normally yes, sadly some bosses don't like to say I am letting you go because you are a poor worker, or I don't like you, or I don't want someone with a nose ring and so on. So they do the lay off story to try and make you feel better or make it easer for them to let you go, no argument.

But if they are going to hire someone else for same job, go re-apply

When you are let go from your job, how long do they have to get your check for time worked

In most cases, your last check should arrive at the same time that it always did.

If it's late, I'd get with Personnel or Payroll or Human Resources asap - to confirm.
