If you have the space for a regular heater there's absolutely no reason you couldn't install one. Back in the 70's, when I worked as a plumber in mobile home factories in my area, we had a small space that we installed a 17 gallon, one element electric water heater. Over the years the size may have increased but whoever told you that a regular water heater was a no-no gave you faulty information. Good luck and thank you for rating my answer. Tom

Diff in hot water tanks-stick built vs. mobile home
Thanks for your answer speedball.sorry, forgot to mention that it'll be a gas fired unit not electric.we thought about going electric, but our electrical box won't allow it.besides, all the lines are right there... been poking around the internet a bit and saw something referring to sealed combustion.the floor already has a hole in it for drawing fresh air for combustion directly under the hot water heater.if I were to install one designed for a stick built house, wouldn't it too draw air from this space?just a little leary about putting the wrong one in.I'm almost ready to pay a contractor to do the job, just trying to save some money... thanks for your advise,I appreciate it...

Some mobile home use Propane fueled water heaters. This may be what you've heard. But technically, it is the same installation, clearances as with Natural Gas water heaters.
