I have 2 student loans that are about 10 years old. They have been on my credit report for about 9 years and just fell off about 8 months ago. Recently new creditors have been contacting me and I am worried that if I talk to them, try to pay, or make any arrangement at all it will place the bas debt back onto my credit. I really don’t want that since it has been about 10 yeas since I had credit. My question is can the do that? Should I get a lawyer? Or should I talk to them and try to pay it. Not that I am proud of it but there has never been a payment to the account if that helps to answer the question.

You need to talk to a local attorney. Student loans don't go away, you can't even discharge them even with bankruptcy. I don't believe they will have any limit on statue of limitation but you need to check with an attorney. It is possible they can still sue you over these

Dispute the debt in writing, ask for verification of tha alleged debt in writing, have them contract you only in writing, they are trying to get you to reaffirm the debt.

I am in simliar situation. Although, I have not defaulted on my loans. I am wondering what the differences are between the private and federal student loans. I know its nearly impossible to get out of federal loans but are private loans different? Meaning, if I simply did not pay what could they do and would they succeed since I am low-income?
