Which State tax do I need to pay ?
    Hi Tax consultants,

I am in a dilemma and do not know which state tax to file.

I am a RF Engineering consultant and work for a company based in Texas. I am a resident of Ohio ( I have the OH drivers license and an apartment in OH), but I worked for six months in Chicago, IL doing consulting for a company in IL.

My employer did not cut any state tax as there is no state tax in Texas. Now I do not know where I need to file my state tax. Whether it is OH or IL?

Or I do not need to file any state tax as the my company is based in Texas and there is no tax in that state.

Any help in this regard will be appreciated.

    Thank You.

    Mir

I'm pretty sure as long as your legal residence was Texas you are clear. Residency is the key.

It never hurts to simply checkout the Ohio tax website of course, but lots of people live in one state and drive across a state line to work and only pay taxes in their home state.

If you are present in a state, then any income earned during this period, must be reported to the state. Income earned while in IL must be reported to IL.

To your resident state, you must report your worldwide income for the year. This is for OH. Then you will claim credit for taxes paid to IL.
