The whole of the white of the eye is red and swollen and sticking out a bit above the iris. The iris is purple inside not the normal brown like the other eye. Everything looks to be in the right place not split or cut but he is keeping the eye shut and is feeling sorry for himself. I have used a tourch to look into both eyes and it is worring to see! Is there any thing else I can do to see how serious this may be. I live along way from any where and the vet near me will not be open again until Monday! Please help if you can some reasurance of what to do next would be gratefully reicieved.

Sadly the only advice I can offer is to get him to a vet. Eye injuries are tricky, and often, if something is really wrong, the sooner you get medical treatment the better the chances that any damage can be fixed.

Is there an emergency vet clinic in your area? How about a humane society?

I'm very sorry to hear your poor dog got hurt like that. He must also be in an enormous amount of pain. There is no question that he needs to see a vet immediately. A wound like that can easily become infected, making this situation even more serious than it already is. This is not something to wait on.

Now, I understand that you came here searching for advice because you care about your dog, but there is no way anyone but a veterinarian can handle this situation properly.

If you want my real opinion, this dog needed to be taken to emergency care as soon as it happened. I understand that you're not close to a vet, but this is the kind of thing that requires you to go well beyond regular protocol. If this were my dog, I don't care if I had to drive 6 hours to get him to a doctor. We would be on our way, not waiting until Monday.

Alternative ideas if your ability to get to any vet before Monday is really, absolutely ZERO: (1) were you on a farm or at a ranch when this happened, or was is your horse? Farms, ranches and really rural areas with lots of animals connected to a business and home will frequently have at least someone available who can handle animal care until a vet can reach them. If you were to show up at the doorstep of someone with access to an elevated level of animal care, I doubt you would be turned away. (2) contact any doctor you can to find out if they can advise you or even see him in the interim.

I realize that I can be tough on posts like this one, but I can only assume that anyone reading about this would be morally obligated to say the same things. I can only imagine how bad you and your dog must be feeling right now. My sympathies to both of you.

Jam, thank you very much for that update. I also live in a country whose language is different than my native tongue. I came without knowing how to speak the language, and I know how hard it can be when you need to communicate during a crisis. I don't know where you are, but I'm deeply relieved to know that you'll get help with this. That medical attention is critical for your pup. My prayers are going out to him. Please let us know when he gets treated and what the diagnosis is. Believe it or not, I think I'm going to worry about him until you come back to tell us that everything's going to be okay with him.
