J-1 Visa, Filling and Tax back - I am so lost
    Hi,

I am working in the US this year from August 1st until next year June 30 and then switching almost surely to an hb-1 visa.

I wonder how to fill my tax forms and I have heard that we can have taxes back. How does all of that work??

Thanks for all the help provided on that forum

While on the J-1 visa, and depending on the type of work you are doing, you may be exempt from all taxes, exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes, or liable for all taxes. I need to know the nature of the work you are doing.

More than likely, your employer is fully aware of your tax status. If they are withholding state and local income taxes and Social Security and Medicare taxes, then you are liable for these taxes. I suggest you discuss this with your payroll office.

Are they withholding Social Security and Medicare? The entry on your check stub would be either:

    Social Security and Medicare

    Or

    OASDI

    Or

    FICA
