After new washing machine installed, drain pipe overflows!
HELP! After new washing machine installed, drain pipe overflows! We used a clog buster on it. Opened the cleanout while doing it and water was flowing good through it. But just as soon as the washer starts to drain, it spurts water all over, when you shut the water off, you can here it rushing through the drain pipe. Don't know what to do. I am disabled on disability, so need a frugal solution. Thanks, Rowdie :o :(

Do you know the diameter of your drain pipe? The old code was 2" and the 2009 code ups that to 3" because so many new machines pump at a higher volume. You should try to rod that old drain to insure there is no clog or restriction but you may find that you ned to restrict the flow rate of the washing machine by installing a reducer. I can't be more specific at this point not knowing your current drain.

The drain pipe is 1 1/2 inches. This washer had been used in another area of the house and the drain pipe it it was the same size except I just noticed when I just went down there there had been another piece added to the pipe that makes the opening 2 inches. Do you think that could be what I need to do? I could do down and see if I could get one. Thanks so much with trying to help me with this, I have been so upset with this problem.:)

We have had quite a few complaints like yours, ( especially with new MayTag washers) where the washer pump is too powerful for a 1 1/2" trap and stand pipe. What size is yours?
I have a solution that I've never had a complaint on and one that I had to use on my washer. You close off the stand pipe the washer connects to with a compression fitting,(see image) or I caulked the hose in with rags and sealed it with duct tape. This makes a water tight connection between the washer and the stand piipe. Nothing can leak out or overflow and the force from the pump will send the discharge out into the main drain. While there is some back pressure involved there will not be enough to damage the washer pump. Outside of oversizing the washer trap and standpipe or reducing the opening at the end of the hose this is about the only solutions that I know that works. Good luck and thank you for rating my answer. Tom

Tom and I both think your piping is too small. Tom's solution will save you the time and money of trying to replace the old pipe with 3". However, if your stand pipes connection to the main is very accessible I'd consider cutting it out and going 3" right now. Its your choice.
