How long ago was the conviction? Generally you need to wait at least 10 years from the conviction, have no more arrests or convictions, and get an attorney to do this for you. And yes, it does take some time to accomplish. It's not just an overnight thing and can take 9 or 10 months to accomplish even with an attorney. So I hope you are not in any big hurry to have this done.

Perhaps, if this is in the US, it will depend on the type of charge and the state. Some states don't allow and others will.

Next it will need to be about 8 to 10 years after you finished any punishment for the charge. They will look to be sure there is no other charges, If you have two or three it is not likely going to happen.
They will want to see a good work history, maybe more education and the such.

Then you hire an attorney and ask for it to be explunged from your record.

*** the Police and any background for any national security job will still see it.
