My question is symple but probably the answer is not as easy as the question.

I need to know what is Multimedia ?what do people mean when they are talking about multimedia applications ? I need to write an academic essay about multimedia but even I don't have enough general information about it :-/ so I would be grateful if you could give me some information about multimedia as soon as possible and help me understand what is multimedia.
