Claim My Parents(Visitors) as my dependent
    Hello,

I'm a U.S. Resident. My parents came to US using visiting visa and stayed with me for more than six months last year 2008. Now I'm about to prepare my taxes and need an ITIN for my parents. Right now they are in INDIA and I don't have any notarized passport documents with me. In this case what I need to do?

Thank you very much for your help in advance,
    Raksha

A dependent must be a U.S. citizen or resident. If they complete 183 days in 2008, they may be resident as per IRS rules.

You can claim your parent as dependent (qualifying relative) if
    1. You provided more than half of their support for the year, and
    2. the parent did not earn more than $3,500 in 2008.

You need notarized copy of passport. India notary will not be accepted. It must be notarized in the U.S. or by U.S. embassy in India.
