Hi I've recently upgraded my PC and when I turn it on it asks me what way I want to boot my computer. When I picked start windows normally the computer just rebots and then goes back to the same screen. Does anybody no what the problem is or what I can do to fix it??

There is some problem with your startup files, preventing the system from booting correctly. First of all try selecting the "last known good configuration" option. This restores a previously working copy of some files that could be damaged.

Let us know how that works (or not)

Well yeah, I know of this problem, used to be a prank.

Some old friends used to drag the hibernate file into the startup directory, so whenver you start your puter, it'll hibernate straight away.

You can remove the file in DOS. Just boot the computer up in dos and find out what's in the startup directory. There could be other reasons, but try this one first. Its pretty common in my school. ;)

Cheech, as I commented this has nothing to do with the hibernate function, this is a system issue.
DOS doesn't exist in Windows XP anymore so you'd be hard pushed to boot into it.

ANy way back to the question in hand.

When the system boots and ask what to boot to select SAFE mode and try a system restore to an earlier time.
I've seen this issue before and it tends to be caused by a bad drive causing system instability.
Also you can turn off the reboot on error command.
Right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced Tab > Startup and Recovery Settings > System Failure > Uncheck Automatically restart box > OK all the way out.

This will allow you to boot your machine, but I would make sure that it is fully patched and all the drivers are up to date.

Might want to check out the boot.ini through MSCONFIG as well:

• Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG
• Select the Boot.ini tab
• Click Check All Boot Paths button

I've tried every option e.g.. Safe mode and last settings and nothing has worked:(

You say you upgraded recently. Did this process complete? Have you successfully run windows since the upgrade? What exactly has been upgraded - the software e.g windows 98 to windows xp or hardware like a new processor or more memory?

I've upgraded the motherboard, raphics card, processor and power supply. And windows has never worked since I've upgraded. It also won't let me install xp onto my hard drive, it says that the bios info could not b loaded

If Windows XP just constantly reboots at start-up,it can indicate driver file problems.Never just update from Windows update.Always go to the manufacturers website.Write down all the hardware,starting with your motherboard, that's "fitted together",and via another PC (friend,family,work,etc),download onto disc,or pen-drive,all the software,and firmware that coresponds to your system.Obviously,this is for when you get access to your desktop.When successful,follow Stu's advice,about trying last known good configuration.

I have a cd that came with the motherboard, it has the drivers on it but I can't install them because windows won't boot:(

Does the windows XP setup program start or does it give you this error with or without the cd in?

Have you got a current backup of any important data stored on this computer's hard drive?

You may need to clean or replace the cd if it cannot read it, however it could be caused by a faulty cd rom drive also!

If the problem occurs even before the cd is entered it may be the actual BIOS on your motherboard. If that is the case I would check the manual and clear the CMOS jumper and try again (remember to set it back to original position).

Whgen I put the xp cd in to install it comes up with the error. I've cleared the cmos and it made no difference. Do u think my motherboard is messed up?

What's the error?

If the error only comes when trying to install using the CD, I would first rule out the CD or the CD Rom Drive. You can check the cd by putting it into another machine and trying to copy all of the contents into a folder on the hard drive. If that works OK you need to test the CD drive either by trying other bootable CDs in it or swapping out for another known good drive and trying again.
