British guy, baby on the way, can I get back to Britain?
Hi, I'm a 29 year old, life-long British citizen. My wife, who is Chinese, and I have just moved to Denmark where I am trying to finish my PHD. We spent the last six months in China. Before that we cohabited in Leeds, U.K. for 3-4 years. My wife lived in the U.K. as an international student for 6 years. She has a degree from Leeds Metropolitan Uni. Well, a few days after we arrived in Denmark, we found my wife is pregnant. We need to make an informed decision about whether we have the baby in China or the UK. We want the child's nationality to be British. We are finding it extremely difficult to negotiate all the immigration/visa/home office websites, where clearly much of the information is targeted at non-British citizens. We need good advice urgently please.

A child born outside the UK will automatically acquire British citizenship by descent if either parent is a British citizen otherwise than by descent at the time of the birth. However, an unmarried father cannot pass on British citizenship automatically, so you must be legally married and after the child is born, you must report birth of your child at the British embassy.

A child born to foreign parents in Denmark will not obtain Danish citizenship.

The child will also obtain Chinese citizenship automatically. Since China does not recognize dual citizenship, when the child is 18, he/she must choose one.
