USB device malfunction on IBM Tt42
    Hi,
I have a Nokia 6300 which I have been connecting via USB cable to my IBM T42 for upload of music etc. I have noticed that the PC would keep on saying that it found new hardware. The last time I connected the phone it did the same and kept on finding new hardware repeatedly. In the mean while I had access to the phone and had no problems in uploading music back and forth. But even when I unplugged the phone and the USB cable it kept on saying that it found new hardware again and again until the PC was shut down. After that I have not been able to connect to any USB devices to the laptop. I have checked that the USB devices functions on other PC's. I have tried to update the Intel chipset, Un-install the USB controllers from the device manager and reinstall by re-boot, tried to update drivers for the USB controllers (which I could not as these apparently were the latest) but nothing helps. The USB drivers are (noted form the device manager ) are
    -Intel(R) 82901DB/DBM USB 2.0-advances hostcontroler - 24CD
    -Intel(R) 82901DB/DBM USB 2.0-Universal Host Controller - 24C2
    -Intel(R) 82901DB/DBM USB 2.0-Universal Host Controller - 24C4
    -Intel(R) 82901DB/DBM USB 2.0-Universal Host Controller - 24C7
Can someone help me get my USB function again? It will be very much appreciated as I have data and pictures etc. I need to backup on a USB hard drive ASAP. Since I have noticed the issue with the USB I have also noticed that the Harddisk comes with loud sounds sometimes and is quite at other times.
    Please help. Thanks in advance!

    IDEAS

As this is a T42, do you run and use the System Update Software? On all my IBM/Lenovo products, I find this to be invaluable as it solves so many problems with ease. If you have never used it, you might find it simplifies management of that laptop. You can check it out here Lenovo Support & downloads - System Update 3.14

As for the hard disk noise, if it is intermittent, you might try defragmenting. Clean out all temp files etc beforehand.
