    Mean and Standard Deviations
    Two Questions!

    1. Stephan is really happy about his mark in research because he feels that he probably got the highest mark of the class. What can you say to Stephan, knowing that his score is 80 % the mean was 84 and the standard deviation was 2. Please explain the proportion or percentage of students who scored higher than him and lower than him.

    2. Mike is writing exams for his grade 6 Ontario elementary testing. He scores in math 85 % the SD for his class is 5 and the mean is 90. Micheline, is being tested for the same test in another class. In her class the SD is to the mean is 80 and Micheline mark is 84.

    a) Could you comment on the dispersion of the marks for both classes. For example, which class seems to have the most homogeneous marks, and why. What could be a plausible explanation?

    b) Could you explain what is the proportion of student that is above Mike in his class and above Micheline in her class?

    Use the formula

We see his score is 2 standard deviations below the mean.

It does not appear he done as well as he thought.

    Can you finish?

We can see that Micheline scored 2 standard deviations above the mean and Mike scored 1 below the mean. What does that tell you? Who done the best.
