    Flexible coupling
How do you slide flexible coupling on 3" pvc drain pipe?

    Hi James:

You don't slide a rubber sleeve on pvc pipe. Instead you fold the rubber sleeve back on itself (effectively folding the sleeve in half) and then slide the pipe into place and FLIP the rubber sleev forward to couple up to the pipe. Then you SLIDE the SS clamp over the rubber sleeve.

Let me know if that makes sense...

However, if you are trying to use Flex Seal Coupling ( all rubber with 2 s.s. bands ) than you : cut the pipe, spray both ends with WD 40, slide coupling all the way on one side, bring in second piece of pipe and slide over the cut. Secure both bands. Make sure you are Half-n-Half over each end of pipe.

If you are using Fernco couplings (No-Hub couplings / with metal sleeve ), do as Mark advices.

Using the WD40 and tapering the ends of the thick coupling and pvc pipe helped keep it from hanging up while sliding on - still VERY tight.

    Hey James...

    I disagree with you... ;)

There are a number of different clamps/couplings (see pictures) to choose from. In fact, the coupling you have chosen is the wrong clamp for any above-ground application!! I hope you aren't planning on having this inspected because it would fail!

Fernco couplings with rubber sleeve and SS bands (last pic.) are strictly intended for UNDERGROUND applications. These will not provide you with any strength especially if this is for a vertical stack application. They are sold everywhere as repair clamps, but are not code legal above-ground anywhere that I know of...

The rest of these SHIELDED clamps are acceptable for above-ground applications...depending on pipe type. The shielded clamp is the difference here..adds stability/strength to application. Fernco clamps are simply rubber sleeves with clamps...not reasonable above ground for real plumbing.

    Good luck!
