Ask Me Help Desk - Viruses and malware intrusions. Better software needed?

I have found that my computer was unprotected and when I installed Norton Anti-Virus 2009 it found 28 intrusions which I have deleted but it seems that there is still a virus on the computer. Could it be that my virus protection software is unable to detect some of the latest ones and is there one that is better and has all the latest of virus and malware protection on them to help clean the computer?

Also, there is a "green virus protection" that has been repeatedly seen on another computer I own that I have never installed but shows me all the viruses that I allegedly have on my computer despite having Norton Anti-Virus fully installed.

One of the error messages that repeatedly appears on my screen that I think is related to a virus has a window that appears with "MPC55AGV2.exe" and the dialog box states "Abnormal Program Termination" and it appears every few minutes requesting for you to hit the OK button for it to go away. Does anyone know what this is about?

Now I am getting a dialog box that states ODB in the header and "The specified procedure could not be found"... and it is happening ever few seconds...

Viruses often try to protect themselves against detection by antiviral products once they are installed. That being said, there really isn't a "best" anti-virus product. Some miss some types of malware and others miss other types.

The "Abnormal Program Termination" means simply that a program has thrown an error and terminated. "MPC55AGV2.EXE" doesn't ring any bells for me, and Google doesn't report any hits.

Often the messages you're seeing are the result of a corrupt operating system. A reinstallation of the operating system or at least a repair of the operating system (that almost never seems to work) is required.

The "The specified procedure could not be found" is usually caused by a missing .DLL.

Also, some of the "viruses" that you're seeing may not be viruses or malware at all. You should post a list of what you're seeing so it can be evaluated.

On one system there is already Norton Anti-Virus but suddenly there is a program that is running on the computer that you are unable to stop from running and it says that it is a "Green Virus Scan" and it is finding all of these viruses on my computer yet I never loaded such a program on my computer, it just loaded itself and when you go to say close it or delete any of the viruses, it tells me I have to pay $100 in order to purchase the software which I didn't even request in the first place. That is one instance... otherwise I have written down all of the others that came up except on the had stated "ODB" in the title but I cannot recall what the message was but they repeatedly kept coming up while I was trying to write the update to this original request for information.

I've run into this type of malware. It's often downloaded when you visit a vulnerable web site. A box will pop up and say something like, "Your computer's infected! Click to do a scan." There will be a single "OK" button. If you click the button, it will infect your computer. Similarly, if you click the "X" in the upper right corner, it will also infect your computer. The only way to close the box is using Taskmanager.

I'm not sure what to tell you. These things can be real pains-in-the-neck.

Google doesn't show anything that's labeled "Green Virus Scan". Basically you need to provide as much information as possible (it needs to be specific -- names in task manager, etc). You might try running HiJackThis and post its scan file. Once the malware is identified, it's possible to get it off your computer.
