How do I open an old treadle sewing machine that's stuck

I have an old treadle sewing machine that won't open any more. It use to. I can't remember if there is something I'm suppose to do besides just opening the top. The top seems stuck and I don't want to break anything. Is there a lever or something underneath? Thanks
