Looking for a book without name or author.
I'm trying to figure out what a book is called but I don't know the name of the book or the author. It's about a rigid society where every child was eventually chosen for an occupation. There was a one position that was special and elevated above the rest, but I don't remember what it was called and I think that's the name of the book. Anyway, this boy was chosen for that and was tutored by an old man. He found out his father killed children and that a little boy (possibly named Gabriel?) was going to be killed. So he ran away and slid down a snow-covered hill. Does anyone know the name of this book? :)

Although your recollection it's exactly right, the book your looking for is called "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. It's wonderful and one of my absolute favorites. Enjoy!!
