Statute of limitations for financial loss and pain and suffering
In 2001, I was assaulted by 6 guys at a house warming party. One of the guys spat in a girls face, I stepped in between them, and was attacked. I was outnumbered at that point 3-1, but was able to fight them off. As I chased them away, one of them struck me in the back of the head with a hammer. I was hit twice more by the hammer, and kicked by 6 guys. My girlfriend at the time tried to help me, and was beat up as well.

I had a pretty bad concussion after that, and ended up dropping out of university because of the ensuing depression. I didn't withdraw formally, I just stopped going. My student loans went into default, and only now have I started paying them off. I really believe that being assaulted by these 6 guys is the reason I didn't finish my undergraduate degree. Would I have a case if I attempted to sue at this point?

Welcome to AMHD. So sorry for your difficulties; statutes of limitation are legal time limits within which to file an action against another party, and are legislated by your government. Where do you live? Hope someone got some jail-time and restitution; the statute on criminal battery, etc. may not have passed.

It sounds like you did not report this incident to the police. If you did not, I doubt if they would still accept a report, whether the SOL has expired (probably) or not.

Without a police report, I doubt if you have a civil case against them either.
