Marrying a permanent legal resident with green card
I am a permanent legal resident with a green card. If I marry a us citizen in the united states, will I automatically become a us citizen? If not, how and when can I obtain us citizenship?

I am from russia. I married a us citizen in russia in 2002. We moved to usa in 2002 and was divorced in 2006. I would now like to marry a us citizen here in the usa. When can I apply for us citizenship?

    Thank you for your help,

    Natasha

Hello. I'm not really sure. But from what I've been told you do atomtically become a citizen if you marry someone that is already a us citizen.if you don't marry anyone then you would have to apply for citizenship. You can just look it up on goole.com. And find the registratino fees and everything. They had my mother take a test about the united states and she had to answer them in front of people. And they determind if she would become a citizen or not. The price is very high. So you should try and apply now before it increases anymore.
I hope I helped. Have a nice night!

Obtaining US citizenship is not automatic... in your case, it depends on what kind of green card you have...

@ If you are permanent resident with 10 yr green card and already divorced, you are eligible to apply for naturalization after 5 years from the date issued on your card. In this case, marriage with US citizen does not make any different.

@ If you have 2 yr conditional green card and never filed to have the condition lifted, you are already out of status.

Marriage to a USC does not grant US citizenship. You are a permanent resident, you will qualify on your own if you meet the residency and time requirements. See the answer above +1. good luck and congratulations!
