Plasma is blood without the red blood cells (which carry oxygen) and the white blood cells (which are part of the immune system). Plasma is a thickish liquid packed with different kinds of proteins.

When someone is injured and bleeding heavily, a transfusion of plasma will prevent them from going into shock. This treatment was developed during World War II to save the lives of soldiers wounded during combat.

Plasma keeps better than "whole blood, which contains blood cells. So plasma is better for use in emergencies.
