    WinXP System Restore
I have a Malware Infection in my Laptop after installing IE7(Beta3). I have
Norton Anti Virus 2006. I tried many ways but I cannot remove it.There is this popup window on my Task Bar "System Alert: Spyware Detected". When ever I am on the internet, at about every five minutes a popup will open telling me to buy a bunch of tools to repair this condition. (Anti Spyware,Anti Virus, Registry Repair etc. etc.)
Most important I tried restoring my system to every available earlier restore points but it would not restore. It kept on saying 'Unable to restore your computer, please try another restore point.
    Can someone please help?
I also have Zone Alarm PRO that is helping me a lot.

Try getting an anti-spyware tool. Anti-Virus utilities are not effective against spyware.

Worth trying are some other anti spyware/virus apps and some system maintenance.
(Most of these steps will work with any Operating System)

Here's some steps for you to take.
1/ Remove temp files and other rubbish form your system, either with inbuilt Disc Clean up or CCleaner.
(Disc clean up; open my computer > right click your C: drive > properties > Disc clean up button on general tab. Let it run and select everything)

2/ To make sure everything is running fine also run both anti virus and anti spyware apps (make sure that they are updated first ;))
(A couple of good removal tools are Spybot and Adaware)
Also helps if the scanning is done in Safe mode as well as normal mode.

ALso an on line virus and spyware scanner is Trend Housecall

The use of a number of different scanners is a must as they check for infections in different ways.

Thank you Curlyben. We are on the same page. Tried every thing you've mentioned and more. Main concern is, why can't I do an early restore. If winxp home has this feature, what are some of the factors affecting this condition? My system restore is always on, my disk space is 8gb of 60gb, boot process is fine, tried disabling some running processes, safe mode, tried a few Dos commands in RUN and in command prompt, change some values in registry edit and a few more. I am not a programer but I have been with computer since DOS. This situation got me. I appreciate any help.
Also, NeedKarma's link is the exact message I got. Thanks ScottGem, I will. This is the most appreciated way to learn.
    Thank again guys. Lalito4u

Win XP only stores a limited number of restore points. There is a setting for how much space is to be allocated to them. If that space is used, then older restore points arte deleted.

Its also possible the malware disabled the ability to inhibit its being removed.
