I have a 2002 Chevrolet trailblazer LT which I leave at my caribbean home for 7 to 8 months a year. Up till now, I have had someone run my SUV on a weekly basis, Someone told me to put a side battery disconnect on the battery and that when I returned to my SUV, all I would have to do is turn the switch t on and my car would start. Any thoughts and recommendations on what to buy? Thanks!

Based on your location and your needs, I'd recommend you use a battery disconnect switch that is normally used on boats.

Just make certain it can handle the expected cranking amperage and it gets installed correctly.

Installing a battery switch is a good idea. However, not starting the vehicle for 7-8 months is a horrible idea. Lead acid batteries self discharge at the range of 1%-25% PER MONTH depending on outside temperature. The warmer the temp, the higher the discharge rate. A battery sitting at 95° will discharge twice as fast as one sitting at 75°. Once discharged, the plates in the battery "sulphate". The sulphation and deep discharging will kill your battery in a very short time.

Rather that start the engine, you may want to install a battery maintainer--BATTERY MAINTAINER. Install the unit under your hood and plug it in. It constantly monitors battery condition and trickle charges it as needed.
