I have a Roper washing machine that I purchased in 1996, and last week when it went to the spin cycle it started making a clicking/grinding sound but it finished OK. Today when I started the washer it started right away making the same sound but seemed to be doing just fine. When it got to the spin cycle it did not start spinning.

Do you think it is worth having a repair person look at it or should I just go out and purchase a new one?

Had this happen to me with a Kenmore. Under the lid there was a switch that pushed in when you closed the lid, that allowed the tub to spin. When you open the lid it pops out. Cost me $3.00 and 10 minutes to fix and the washer is still going 5 years later.
Might be worth trying
