It's possible you have a corrupt profile. If that is the case then you would have booted up into what would look like a brand new Windows installation. The good news is that your programs and files are still there (use Windows Explorer to look into Program Files folder). I recently did a tech support job that had to do with fixing a corrupt profile and it's not for the novice. I would recommend seeking out a trusted (well referenced) tech support person in your area.

What operating system you're running, and its version.

What is the exact text of the error message if possible, this may convey a lot of information

2 options, system restore back to point when there was no issue or a repair installation - I would attempt the system restore first

    System Restore
    -Go down till you see
How to use System Restore to restore Windows XP to a previous state
How to restore Windows XP to a previous state

    Repair Installation
A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied.

    Perform a Repair Installation

You can try a repair installation to fix windows itself and then go through process of seeing what software you can get installed

A system restore will be your best bet as a system restore will bring all those shortcuts back to the way they were before problems started happening

\Basically, the PC will be in the same working state as it was before issues started - anything you did after problems started will have to be reinstalled

At this point you would need to do a repair installation

If you do not have an xp disc, see if ;you borrow one from someone but must be same version as you have installed or it will not let you do the repair - but if you have one on hand, use that one

    Repair Installation
A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied.

I had a problem like this kind of not to long ago, I went to the dentist one day left my computer on like normal everything was fine, I got home and it was shut off, when I went to cut it on it would only come on in safe mode and I was like that's weird when I finally got it to come up there wasn othing on my computer, it was like vista and everything was deleted there was one folder in the middle of my screen anyway I finally got my computer to restore to the day before and that finally fixed my problem, I'm not sure if it will help you but you can give it a try, just go into system restore and restore it to a previous date

Lilium, please some consistency would help us in assisting you.

I can clearly see that yoy are up and running on Win XP with IE8.
Now admittedly running BETA software such as IE8 may well be causing you some problems, so a more stable browser, such as Firefox might be in order.
