    Odds of survival?
My puppy was hit by a car yesterday. She has been in the hospital since and is undergoing surgery right now. I am so nervous, waiting for the phone to ring to find out if she survives through the surgery. She was hit hard and her stomach moved to her chest area. She's on oxygen because she has to struggle to breathe on her own. They had to put her on a ventilator earlier today because she turned blue and collapsed. I'm so sad and I feel so helpless. Does anyone have any experience with this type of surgery? The doctors say it's minute by minute with her survival. Please keep her in your thoughts that she makes it through this. Her name is Cookie, she's only 7 months. Old.

First - my thoughts are with you. Been there, done that with emergency surgery.

You have to believe and trust your Vet to begin with. If it were hopeless, your Vet would let you know. I always read how money hungry they are but I have NEVER had that experience, never. My Vets have always been straight forward.

Secondly, puppies are resilient. Her age is on her side. My dog was on a vent for a period, came home on IVs - and lived another 11 years. With mine it was torsion bloat, somewhat similar to what you're going through, same sort of thing. The waiting was terrible but she pulled through.

I'm sure they've told you that with every passing minute - it's a good sign.

As a side note - years ago my best friend had a Cocker named Cookie. Haven't heard a dog with that name in years.

So - Cookie, I'm pulling for you. And you have to remember to take care of yourself - this is just such a terrible time and you have to stay strong and keep your fingers crossed.

    Keep us informed.

Thank you for your thoughts. She pulled through the surgery great! Now it's another waiting game, they told me the next 12-24 hrs. are critical. The waiting to find out is so hard.

Fingers crossed so hard they are blue. She's made it through the first step.

I know - the worse part is the waiting but there's no way around it. Keeping her - and you - in my thoughts and prayers.

    Keep us informed.
