I am using Vista and my drive D says it is full do to back ups.My question is can I go into my computer and right click on the mouse and scroll to format wipe it out and then run a systems back up.will that cause any problems?I have changed the settings now so iys not backing up everything.

Not really clear, do you have xp on c: and vista installed on D:

You'll need another external drive to do backups.

It is my recovery drive.its full cause the user used a monthly back up and backed up everything with out customizing it.now it full.If its just for backups why not format it and run a new back after.the drive size is 7 gigs free space left is 10.. 4 mg only 7 gigs to keep running backups why doesn't it delete old back ups?

You really don't want to mess with d: if it is your recovery drive as mentioned in the previous post.

If you wipe it out, you will get about you 8-10gb as also mentioned but if you do that just to get 10gb of space, If anything happens to laptop and you need to recover back to factory settings, you will not be able to do that

If you are just looking for more space, clean up C: drive or as mentioned, get an external drive

For starters a backup should be on a separate media than your current operating system. What if your hard drive crashes? All your backing up becomes worthless. If you are only worried about data then back it up regularly to DVD.

Formating will get my spaceback then my question is will I be able to run a system back up to that same drive.

If it is recovery drive, all info has already been mentioned

-recovery partitions are not meant to be written to, just used to recover drive back to factory settings

If the drive size is only 7gb, that is all that can be written to it

Here's the solution to my question... my drive d is full it's a back up drive on vista.you go to disk clean up click on more optionsclick clean up on system restore and shadow copies.the reason my hard drive was full was because of all the restore points.run a new back up hard drive back to normal.

I could have told you that but in concern of you removing a factory partition that has your factory settings for a reinstallation from scratch - I advised not to do that
