Hi, what is the most efficient way to set up a train furnace for winter use? Ie: have it heat the house to a high temperature and leave it at that 24 hours a day during the cold weather, or have it set low overnight and then have it heat up the house in the morning?

Ask 5 people and you`ll get 6 answers,, I`ve tried them all and have found it to be as efficient to set the tstat at one comfortable setting and leave it alone,, when tstat is turned down at night and house gets cool,, and turned back up in morning the furnace runs a longer time to heat the cold house ,furniture,walls,carpet and flooring so it rounded out to about the same,, but this is just one opinion,, wait for more

Actually the most efficient way to run a furnace is to just shut it off and save all the $$$ you spend on fuel. This does create some problems but you cannot beat it for efficiency. Just kidding.

This question has been asked by just about every homeowner I sold a furnace to or service calls I ran of many years. Any time you lower the temperature in your home you will save energy since at a lower temperature you will slow up the heat loss of the home. The problem is that the savings is a very small percentage since you have to heat the home back up again to be comfortable. If I am going to be gone for over a day I cut my temperature down then before I come home I call my system with a telephone and tell the computer/thermostat to turn the heat up so it is comfortable when I arrive back home. Other than that I just leave it set at one comfortable setting.
